To clearify i had planned on milling the individual componets prior to useing the precip method. This will be my first atempt at BP.
I had thought of doing the milling only method but i thought i would try this once or twice first and then milling and see witch gives better performance.

This is why im hesatent to buy more books untill i have tried the methods in the books i have. It seems a very debated topic as to the best way to make BP.
My goal is the simpelest and safest method to make BP thats adiquit for typical pyro devices.

Also do you think dexitrin for harder grains is at all nessary if i only plan on useing the BP for rockets at this time?

Point of clarification: Peregrin's book does NOT describe milling. He uses the precipitation method instead. Big difference in procedure. I've used his method for most of the comp I've prepared, so I'm not an authority on milling.

Ok it looks like ill start with a 500g batch. Ill use Tom Perigrins book as a guid for the first batch. 1 question though. Do most of you make cakes out of the final milled BP? A lot of what ive read from verious posts do not mention cakeing the BP and then screening it but it is mentioned in many books.

   Hi Bill:

"Too big" a batch is very situation-dependent, but the precipitation method as described by Peregrin starts with a 500 g batch. Beyond that... well, I don't know if I'd go beyond that for a first batch or two or three or ten...

Milling BP is a different matter, and I haven't milled enough to be an authority. You may want to check with your local pyro group as they probably have more expertise than I do. Or maybe someone else wants to speak up....?

I've milled several hundred lbs, both for rocketry and BP firearms in my day. For media I purchased 3/4 round brass rod, cut em 3/4" long, and chamfered the edges. Using a 20 lb mill, I put 4 lbs of brass "pellets" into the drum with 12 lbs of chemicals, and mill for 6 hours, using a 2.5 sulfur content.

! BTW, do that outside, in a safe place..

This will be my last post until Monday, I am leaving tomorrow morning to Denver to give my daughter away, which seems crazy considering how much she cost me ;-)

   ......

   she's getting married BTW

Have fun and be safe, get stoopid with BP and it can and will put a world of hurt on ya. Read David's book is what I'm saying, and pay attention..
